HYACINTHUS is the one-man project of Jacinto Miguel Corral, a classically trained and multi-instrumentalist from Argentina. His style is melodic symphonic prog in the pure 70's tradition and shows his strong classical roots (Wagner and Mahler mostly come to mind). Both of his cd's are concept albums featuring Latimer-like guitar solos, melodic synths and lush keyboards reminiscent of Rick Wakeman.

In "Fantasia en Concerto", eight guests contribute extra bass, keyboards, cello and vocals. A drummer is also credited but the drums sound almost entirely electronic, bringing the overall enjoyment down a notch - a common flaw to both albums. Where Corral really shines is as a guitarist, churning out some heart felt and uplifting melodies as well as slower, darker tunes. This is accessible material but the multi-layered structures provide enough nuances to keep the listener on his toes.

Recommended to fans of melodic prog such as The ENID, CAMEL, Mike OLDFIELD and the likes.

Gismonti began his formal music studies at the age of six on piano. After studying classical music for 15 years, he went to Paris to study with orchestration and analysis with Nadia Boulanger and composer Jean Barraqué, a disciple of Schoenberg and Webern. After his return to Brazil, Gismonti began to explore other musical genres. He was attracted by Ravel's approach to orchestration and chord voicings, as well as by "choro", a Brazilian instrumental popular music featuring various types of guitars. In order to play this music he learned to play guitar, beginning on the 6-string classical instrument and switching to a ten-stringed guitar in 1973. He spent two years experimenting with different tunings and searching for new sounds. This exploration of timbre is further reflected in his use of kalimbas, sho, voice, bells, etc. By the early '70s, he had laid the groundwork for his current style which incorporated elements drawn from musicians as wide-ranging as Django Reinhardt and Jimi Hendrix. In the 1970s and 1980s he collaborated several times with Nana Vasconcelos recording for ECM. Some best-selling albums such as the Brazilian released eponymous Egberto Gismonti were never officially released in the US.

Jesus Christ Superstar is a rock opera that became a musical by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber. It highlights the political and interpersonal struggles of Judas Iscariot and Jesus. The rock opera is based on the canonical gospels' accounts of the last week of Jesus' life, beginning with Jesus and his followers arriving in Jerusalem and ending with the Crucifixion. Twentieth-century attitudes and sensibilities as well as contemporary slang pervade the lyrics, and ironic allusions to modern life are scattered throughout the political depiction of the events. Stage and film productions accordingly feature many intentional anachronisms.

A large part of the plot focuses on the character of Judas who is depicted as a tragic figure who is dissatisfied with what he views as Jesus' lack of planning, and is alarmed by the relatively recent claims of his divinity.
His music is recognized by its use of a large variety of instruments in relatively minimalist compositions, often with a touch of either European classical music or French folk music, using primarily the piano, accordion or violin together with instruments like the melodica, xylophone, toy piano, ondes martenot, harpsichord and typewriter. He has been compared to musicians Chopin, Erik Satie, Phillip Glass and Michael Nyman.
Wikipedia

Yann Tiersen - La valse des monstres (1995)

Country : France
Genre: Instrumental

Tracklist

01. The opening "Moon Child," with its attractively spacy vocals, is reminiscent of the days of "The Creator Has a Master Plan," but this version sounds too contrived to rival the classic earlier recording. The mood is subdued throughout and the choice of tunes definitely on the conservative side ("All or Nothing at All" and "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes," among the six tracks). William Henderson is lovely on piano, while the drummer (Eddie Moore) and percussionist (Cheikh Tidiane Fale) keep to the quiet side. The results may have originally disappointed some of Sanders' fans, but with time the saxophonist clearly reinvented himself as a more traditional improviser capable of thoughtful and pensive deliberations. -
by Steven Loewy, AMG

Pharoah Sanders - Moonchild (1990)

Tracks:
1. Actually, Coltrane penned only one of the eight tunes, while Sanders wrote six, but the spirit of the master looms heavily throughout. Sanders displays an uncanny resemblance to Trane's unique way of over-blowing and his special ability to get inside a ballad. Pianist John Hicks is in perfect form and contributes mightily to the success of the session. Most will probably prefer the original Coltrane to Sanders' imitations, but Africa is nonetheless a joyous and worthy tribute to one of the giants of jazz. This album marked somewhat of a backtrack for the saxophonist, as he had frequently become identified with much more traditional playing. -
by Steven Loewy, AMG

Pharoah Sanders - Africa (1988)

Tracks:
1. Mingus had already put together the core of the band that would reach its summit two years later with Mingus Ah Um, including saxophonist Shafi Hadi, trombonist Jimmy Knepper, and drummer Dannie Richmond, who would be with Mingus's bands for the next two decades. The music has Mingus's distinct stamp, the rhythmic aggressiveness, sudden time (and mood) shifts, contrapuntal themes, and a palette of sounds that reaches back through bop to early jazz for the vocalizing, plunger-muted horns. His bass often sounds like articulate thunder as he presses his musicians toward a unique musical vision. Completing the group are two striking soloists: the seldom-heard trumpeter Clarence Shaw, best known for his work on Mingus's contemporaneous New Tijuana Moods, who combines thoughtful hesitancy and melodic daring; and pianist Bill Evans, whose distinctive musical presence and lyric imagination add to Mingus's often dense harmonies. The turbulent "West Coast Ghost" and the emotionally charged "Celia" stand out. ”

“The composer and bass player Charles Mingus recorded East Coasting for Bethlehem in 1957, in between such classics as Tijuana Moods (RCA) and Mingus Ah Um (Columbia). In addition to featuring an early version of "Celia," along with some numbers he never recorded again, East Coasting is notable for the presence of pianist Bill Evans, who briefly worked for Mingus before joining Miles Davis for the landmark Kind Of Blue.

Charlie Mingus - East Coasting (1957) (2005)

Track Listings

1. He is one of the best known and most celebrated pianists of the twentieth century. He stopped performing concerts in 1964, dedicating himself to the recording studio for the rest of his career—as well as performances for television and radio, non-musical radio documentaries, and other projects.

Glenn Gould: Concert de Moscou 12/5/1957, Tchaikovski Conservatory

Track List

ALBAN BERG (1885-1935)

ANTON WEBERN (1883-1945)

[2] VARIATIONS POUR PIANO, OP. 27 (4'43)
Glenn Gould parle d'Ernst Krenek (1'25)

ERNST KRENEK (NÉ EN 1900)

EXTRAITS DE LA SONATE POUR PIANO N°3, OP. 62 N 4
[3] ALLEGRETTO PIACEVOLE, ANIMATO E FLESSIBILE (4'48)
[4] ADAGIO (6')
Glenn Gould s'adresse au public (1'26)

JEAN-SÉBASTIEN BACH (1685-1750)

[5] EXTRAITS DE L'ART DE LA FUGUE, BWV 1080
Contrepoints 1,4,2 (10'15)

[6] EXTRAITS DES VARIATIONS GOLDBERG, BWV 988
Variations 3,18,9,24,10,30 (7'27)

GLENN GOULD, pianotreasureboxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12411122197128337390noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6901412714796606669.post-58882782893719723092009-11-29T01:07:00.003+02:002009-11-29T01:11:23.939+02:00The Who - A Quick One Box (2008)

The Who - A Quick One Box (2008)

Release: 2008
Type: Album/Compilation
Length: 126:51

Tracklist:

Disc 1 (mono)

1. Their tracks are evocative soundscapes, usually instrumental, that focus on Frayne's melodic guitar work awash in effects.

Their first release was a collaboration between Frayne, drummer Brendan Gamble and vocalist Lynn Canfield which the band self-released in 1992. Some of these tracks reappeared later that year on the Greek vinyl-only, Elfish label release Of Shapes That Haunt Thought's Wilderness. The recordings were re-released on both Parasol Records and Rykodisc in 1995 and 1998, respectively. The Rykodisc version led off with the song "Silent Hills." The track later appeared on the first disc of National Public Radio's "All Songs Considered" CD series, which collected songs used as interstitial music during All Things Considered. Four albums followed on Badman/Jemez Mountain.

Lanterna - Elm Street

Release: 2001
Country: USA
Type: Album
Length: 59:58

Tracklist:

01. Elm Street
02. B minor
03. Spirits
04. Thirty
05. Departures
06. Old Seattle
07. Wolves
08. Smoke
09. Saturn's Rings
10. New Moon
11. Glass
12. Dog Days

Product Description
'Elm Street' the compelling all instrumental follow up to their acclaimed debut album 'Lanterna.'
