Comprised of two sets of brothers and the singer Matt Berninger, their first album was released (on their own label Brassland formed with writer Alec Bemis) before they had even played live.
Their second album Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers was co-produced and mixed with Peter Katis (of Interpol renown), and Padma Newsome from Clogs contributed with arrangements and orchestration.
After the mini album Cherry Tree was released in 2004 the band had come to the attention of Beggars Banquet in the UK, who signed the band and released their third proper lp Alligator. Again recorded with Kattis and Newsome, the album has received rave reviews in the press (Uncut Album of the month for April 2005 with 5 stars) and gained more attention for the band, who have now been able to quit their day jobs.
